Make Your Own Monogrammed Ipad Stand

I started using a digital planner on my iPad and thought it would be nice to have an iPad stand. So, I took some things that I already had lying around and made one. It turned out so cute!!

I had purchased an iPhone stand from IKEA, but my phone didn’t fit with the case on. So, it just got tossed aside. I had some wooden plaques from the Dollar Tree in my stash and tried out a few until I found the perfect one.

I used a leftover piece of wood and nailed it to the front so that the iPad didn’t slip off.

I wanted it to match my craft studio, so I used some leftover latex paint that matches the walls.

To finish it off, I designed an adorable monogram in Cricut Design Space. I used glitter Heat Transfer Vinyl. I ironed it onto the painted wood.

Finally, I painted one coat of ModPodge to seal it and protect it.

HOW TO

Step 1

The first thing I did was cut this piece of leftover wood down to 3 inches for the front of the stand.

Step 2

Next, I cut off the bull-nose of the stand from Ikea. I needed a flat surface to nail the wood to.

Step 3

I used a little bit of wood glue and then nailed the small piece to the stand’s front. It was a perfect fit.

This gives it a little lip so that the iPad doesn’t slip off.

Step 4

Next, I used wood glue to glue the little plaque to the stand. I inserted it where the phone would usually go.

Step 5

After the glue dried, I painted the iPad Stand.

I wanted it to match my craft studio, so I painted it with the leftover sample of latex paint that I used on my walls.

Step 6

When the paint was dry, I added this monogram that I cut out of Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV).

I ironed it onto the wood. Then, I applied one coat of ModPodge to the front of it.

Step 7

Here it is holding my work iPad. It’s at the perfect angle, and it’s just what I needed! I love it!

BLOOPERS

After giving the whole thing a coat of paint, the little plaque started coming apart. I think it’s just a bunch of layers of thin wood stacked and glued together.

So, I added some wood glue and some clamps, and we were back in business.

Office Chair Makeover Part II

How to Finish off the Back of an Office Chair

This is Part II. You’ll definitely want to check out Part I of this tutorial. CLICK HERE to see the transformation process!

To finish off this office chair’s back, I had to try some techniques that I’ve never done before. But when has that ever stopped me? The back of the chair was reasonably easy to do.

So, step out of your comfort zone and just go for it!

This is the same upholstery tack strip that I purchased and used for the back.

SUPPLIES

Needle and thread

HOW TO

Step 1

Once I was done stapling the vinyl all the way around, it’s time to add the piping.

NOTE: This is an image of the seat bottom, but I wanted you to see what it should look like. I forgot to take a picture of the actual seat back at this point.

Step 2

Cut your vinyl in 4 inch wide strips on the bias. The length will be determined by how much it will take to go around the chair’s back.

Sew your strips together on an angle.

Step 3

Fold your vinyl in half with your cording sandwiched between the fold.

Using your zipper foot, sew close to the cording to form the piping.

Step 4

Starting at the bottom, staple the piping/welting around the edge of the chair’s back.

Once you get back around to the bottom, cut your cording slightly shorter and overlap the vinyl with the other edge. Staple.

Trim any excess vinyl.

Step 5

Slip the bar under the piping—you many need to take out some staples to get it just right.

Once you have it in place, secure the piping around the bar.

Step 6

Next, start stapling your upholstery tack strip around the edge of the seatback. Make sure the teeth are facing outward. Place a staple in each hole, all the way around.

Using clippers (I just used wire cutters), clip the tack strip when you get to the end.

Using a hammer, hammer the teeth closed slightly.

Step 7

Cut your final back piece of vinyl with a 1-inch allowance around all four sides. This will be the main piece that covers the rest of the wood.

On the edge that will be at the bottom of the chair, cut two slits about 1 inch up and about 2 1/2 inches apart.

Fold the small edge over and double stitch.

Step 8

Cover your hammer with a piece of vinyl. This way, when you hammer the teeth all the way closed, it won’t damage the vinyl on your chair.
Starting with the bottom, fit the edge of your vinyl into the teeth. Hammer the teeth down.

Go to the top of the chair and fit the vinyl into the teeth, stretching the vinyl a tad.

Tuck the vinyl into the teeth all the way around and hammer down.

Go around one more time and hammer all of the teeth closed.

Step 9

Assemble the rest of the chair.

BLOOPERS

This was the first time for me to use this upholstery tack strip. Here is the photo of how far along I got the first time before I realized that I was putting it on wrong.

It is supposed to go on with the teeth facing out.
So I had to pull all of the staples out and redo it.

Ribbon Bulletin Board

Ribbon Bulletin Board Mini Makeover

I have had this little mail organizer with the ribbon bulletin board for years. It used to be near the entryway of my little house. It was great for dropping the mail in when coming in the front door. I don’t have a place for it in my home now.

We’re still in the middle of a pandemic, so the kiddos are doing distance learning from home. Everyone has a desk in their room. It was the perfect little piece to go over Miss P’s desk. She can hang her Zoom schedule on it and keep essential school items nearby.

This was such an easy makeover. I simply took everything apart and put it back the way I found it. This is an excellent example of repurposing something in your home. It’s usually a lot simpler than you think.

SUPPLIES

Ribbon Board
Fabric

HOW TO

Step 1

Unscrew everything and take it apart.

Step 2

Paint the wooden pieces.

Step 3

Using your tools, remove the old ribbon and fabric.

Step 4

After removing the old fabric and ribbons, cover the board with your new fabric.

The foam glued to my board was GREEN. So, I had to use 2 pieces of fabric to cover it.

Staple your new fabric onto the board. I didn’t use a lot of staples. I’ll finish it off after I staple all of the ribbons in place.

Step 5

Cut all of your ribbons and lay them out on your bulletin board.

Step 6

Melt the ends of your ribbon so that they don’t fray.

Step 7

I started with the center and worked my way out one direction at a time.

Measure equal distance between each ribbon.
Staple each ribbon to the back one at a time.

Once I was finished stapling all of the ribbons, I finished securing the rest of the fabric with staples.

Step 8

By now, your wood pieces should be dry.

Gather all of your pieces and start reassembling everything.

Sometimes you get lucky and a project goes smoothly. This was one of those times!

Desk Chair Makeover

DIY Tufted Desk Chair Makeover

I needed a new desk chair for my craft room. A task chair to be more specific. I didn’t want a chair with arms so that I can spin around to all of my different workstations.

I found a chair on Facebook Marketplace for free. It was nice how it was. But the leather was peeling, and it looked it bit weathered. Also, I wanted a white chair to match my craft room furniture.

I decided I would give this chair a makeover. But, this would be the first time that I would try tufting and using upholstery tack strip. I have made slipcovers for chairs and reupholstered simple chair bottoms. But, this was a lot different than that.

I’m going to provide step-by-step instructions below, but keep in mind; this was my first time doing this. I just want to show how I did it to hopefully inspire you to try something out of your comfort zone.

This is the exact upholstery tack strip that I purchased from Amazon.

HOW TO

Step 1

Start with disassembling your chair. I took pictures as I went along, so I would know how it was supposed to go back together.

Step 2

Paint the main part of the chair. Put tape over any place for screws so that you don’t mess up the threading.

I decided that I wanted the nuts and knobs to be white as well. So I taped off the parts I didn’t want painted and sprayed them white as well.

I let it dry between coats while I started working on the rest of the chair.

Step 3

While the rest of the chair was drying, I started removing staples from the seat bottom and back.

I saved all of the old pieces of fabric and foam so that I could use them as a template later if needed.

I removed everything until I got down to the bare wood.

Doing this gave me a clean slate. I was able to use this seat bottom as a template. I took a piece of poster board and traced the seat onto the board.

Step 5

It was much easier to draw out my design on the poster board than to try and sketch it onto the wood.

I graphed 1″ lines on the poster board to see exactly where I wanted my buttons.

Step 6

Next, I cut it out and poked holes where all the buttons would be. This way, I could push my permanent marker through the hole to mark the wood where my buttons would go.

Step 7

Once I had the spots marked, I drilled holes using a 3/8″ drill bit.

Note: I didn’t use the drill bit in the photo. I used a wood drill bit, but put the wrong one in for the picture.

Step 8

After drilling my holes, I glued 2″ foam to the top of the seat.

I used an electric cutting knife to cut it to the shape of my seat bottom.

Step 9

Next, I wrapped around the edges of the 2″ foam and wood with 1/2″ foam. I glued it with spray glue.

I let the glue dry for a couple of minutes and then sprayed and folded the foam’s edges onto the board.

Step 10

I covered the entire top and sides with batting. I stapled it onto the bottom of the seat.

Step 11

Using an upholstery needle, stick it through the hole in the back to mark the spot for the hole on the batting. I used a permanent marker to mark where all the holes will go.

Step 12

Using a soldering iron, I melted holes in my batting and foam. The holes are approximately 1 inch in diameter, and they go all the way to the wood.

Step 13

Next, I sketched the same design that I drew onto the seat bottom, onto the back of the vinyl.

This time, I added 2″ between each button to allow for the vinyl to go down into the foam. I also gave myself 6″ around the design for it to wrap around the sides and onto the bottom

Example:

Seat bottom 24″ wide
3 buttons x 2″ vinyl = 6″ vinyl
6″ vinyl to wrap around sides and back
24″ vinyl + 6″ vinyl + 6″ vinyl = 30″ wide

Step 14

Get your covered buttons ready with a 15″ piece of waxed button thread. Loop it onto the button like in the picture.

NOTE: I will be publishing a separate “how-to” on the covered buttons.

Step 15

Thread your button onto the upholstery needle.

Put slight pressure onto the front of the vinyl while looking at the design on the back. Once your needle is lined up with where the hole should be, punch it through.

Then, guide it through the matching hole in the batting and foam and out the other end. You should be able to take the needle off.

Make sure your button is all the way down in the hole. Pull the string tight and give it three staples. Pull the line in the opposite direction and give it three more staples. Finally, pull it back in the opposite direction and end it with three staples.

Move on to the next button.

Step 16

This step can be done before you begin putting the vinyl on. I forgot to do it, so I did it at this point.

I took the electric knife and made slits in the foam from the foam’s edge to the row of closest buttons. Go down about 1/2 way through the foam.

This makes a little channel for the vinyl to sit inside.

Step 17

You have to shape your diamonds with your fingers as you upholster it.

This picture shows what it looks like about halfway through the process. I basically folded the extra vinyl under to shape the diamond.

Step 18

Staple the vinyl to the bottom of the seat.

NOTE: I will do a separate post on how to upholster a seat.

Step 19

I just reused the piece of fabric that was on the bottom of the seat previously.

Step 20

Not bad for my first time, if I do say so myself! 🙂

Step 21

Reassemble the seat.

Now repeat that whole process for the seatback.

I also purchased Roller Blade Wheels from Amazon. Totally worth it! No need for a chair mat and I don’t have to worry about my wood floors getting damaged.

BLOOPERS

There were so many “firsts” for me on this project. So, there was a lot of trial and error.

But, the thing that made me want to cry was when I realized that I tufted the seat BOTTOM instead of the seat BACK. I totally thought I started with the seatback. But, it was the seat. I didn’t realize it until I went to screw it onto the chair.

Insert major meltdown here! It took me d-a-y-s to do this seat. And now I had to decide if I wanted to start over or, just leave it like that and do it again to the seatback. I screwed it into the chair, and it sat on it, and it felt fine. So, I sucked it up and started on the seatback.

It took me a lot less time to do it this time, now that I knew what I was doing. But then I made a major blooper on the seatback. You may have noticed that I put the seat back on the chair upside down. I had to leave it because I didn’t realize it until I had already stapled the upholstery tack strip on it. That took forever, so I wasn’t about to rip it off and start over.

I learned a lot from this project. NEVER give up. I didn’t say never cry because that is okay in my book. Just get back up and keep going. I mean, look at this chair! It’s gorgeous!

Make Your Own Ironing Station

I love this new ironing station. This is the Alex drawer unit on casters, from IKEA. It’s only 26 inches high, so it fits right under my counter. If I sit at my corner desk, I can pull it out and just spin around in my chair to use it. I don’t even have to get up if I don’t want to.

I had an old ironing mat. It was probably 15 years old or even older. It served the purpose, but I needed an upgrade. Superman was headed to the Home Depot and asked if I needed anything. That was a loaded question. One of everything, please!

He found the perfect piece of plywood for me to upholster! After he got home with it, he cut off about 6 inches of it. It ended up being 24″ x 19″. I wanted it about an inch smaller on the sides so that it doesn’t bump the table leg or anything else.

I picked up some wonderful cotton batting. I specifically wanted 100% cotton batting after a microwave baked potato maker fiasco a few years ago. I made a bunch of family members baked potato makers that you use in the microwave, but some were made with polyester thread. Well, in case you didn’t know, polyester can catch fire in the microwave. Let’s just say I learned my lesson about using cotton thread for anything that might get hot.

This project was so easy, and the ironing station works like a charm! It’s light enough to pick up and move around if I need to. And heavy enough to stay still while ironing. I’m so pleased with how it turned out!

I did grab some shelf stabilizer from the Dollar Tree and put it under the board, mostly to protect the top of the drawer unit. I’m not sure if I need it, but if the ironing station stays in place, I’ll probably keep it under there.

This is what I was using before I made the ironing board. I thought I could take this mat and cover the board with it. I ended up accidentally cutting the fabric, and then I didn’t have enough to cover the board. I tried using it anyway. That just created more work, because I ended up having to remove all the staples. I’m glad it didnt work out though. This mat was old and stained. My new ironing board looks brand new. I love it!

Scrapbook Paper Organizer

DIY Your Own Paper Organizer

I needed a storage solution for my scrapbook paper. I found this how-to over on Jennifer’s site and liked the idea. I didn’t need one as tall as hers, so I looked around online and found the perfect 2 cube organizer at Target.

I asked Superman if he could help me make a paper organizer out of it. He was happy to help.

The box just sat there for a few days before I finally put the organizer together. I just followed the simple instructions that came with it. The first thing Superman did was disassemble it to make it easier to create the shelves. haha

I love how it came out!! Superman went above and beyond!

SUPPLIES

1 two-cube organizer $30 each
1 piece of hardboard (1/8″ x 48″ x 96″) $8.28 each
14 square dowels (36″ x 3/8″ x 3/8″) $1.10 each
1″ brad nails

TOOLS

saw (we used a circular saw and a skill saw)
air compressor (I got mine at The Home Depot on Black Friday one year.

HOW TO

Cut dowels into 3 equal lengths. They’ll almost be 12 inches.
Cut hardboard into 3 strips lengthwise. Each strip will be 96″ long x 14 1/2″ wide.
Cut each strip by 13 7/16″. You’ll end up with a shelf that is 14 1/2″ x 13 7/16″. We were able to get 20 shelves out of one piece of hardboard.
Measure out the placement of each set of dowels.
Using your brad nailer, nail the dowel to the inside of the shelf. We were able to install 9 sets per cube, not including the bottom shelf of the organizer itself.
Just slide in the shelves. If they are frayed from the saw, you can use a lighter or torch to burn the edges.
We used the scraps to make a backing on the organizer so that the shelves and/or paper don’t fall out the back.

BLOOPERS

The first thing Superman said when he was finished was, “Next time, make my life easier and just tell me what you want so I can make it from scratch.” He didn’t like the idea that I bought the organizer from Target and expected him to work around those measurements. Now I know.

While cutting the strips of the hardboard, Superman wrote down the wrong measurement and cut each strip about 1/4″ too big. Ultimately, he had to go back and cut each individual shelve again. Boo.

The ultimate blooper is not measuring how high I needed the organizer to be to fit under my counter. I was so focused on making sure the inside of each cube was at least 12″ wide to fit my paper, that I didn’t pay attention to the actual overall height. Turns out it’s about 2 inches too tall to fit under my counter. So, it will have to take up room next to my desk/counter space. Right now it’s right by the door. I don’t think it will stay there. Those corners are sharp! I guarantee I’ll be running into one of them.

Melamine Edging

How to Apply Melamine Edging

I’ve been trying to get my craft room in order. I have no excuse, we’ve been in this house for almost a year now. But, in between flying and volunteer obligations, I didn’t have the motivation. And now, superman has been sharing my space as he is working from home. So, I typically only have the weekends to be in here. One of the things I wanted to do was to apply some melamne edging to part of my work station.

This exposed wood on one of the counter space edges has been bothering me for a while. So I ordered melamine edging from the Home Depot. I was able to pick it up in less than an hour with their curbside pick up.

The process was so easy! You just iron the stuff on

SUPPLIES

1 package of melamine edging 13/16″ x 8′

TOOLS

HOW TO

Simply iron the melamine onto the edge of the board/counter.
Trim excess with scissors.

BLOOPERS

Shockingly, I don’t have any. Unless you count the fact that I didn’t go all the way around the board. I only applied it on the edges that you could see.

How to Clean Your Cricut Mats

Clean Those Old Cricut Mats

This is even hard for me to believe. But, I’ve had these mats for over ten years! I have cleaned them before, but it has been years! I tried the Awesome Cleaner from the Dollar Tree, and they’re so fresh and clean! Let me show you how to clean your old Cricut mats, too.

I cleaned two 12 x 24″ mats and a 12 x 12 Matt. I’m not sure why but the 12 x 12 that came out brand new clean and the 12 x 24 mats are clean, but not as tacky.

I taped off the edges with washi tape from the Dollar Tree and quickly sprayed it with spray glue. I let them sit out to kind of dry a little. That worked for me.

One day I’ll break down and buy a new mat, but today is not that day. I’d love to purchase the new Cricut Maker machine. It comes with two mats. Maybe that’s how I justify buying one. It comes with mats!

SUPPLIES

1 bottle of LA’s Totally Awesome Cleaner [$1.00]
Paper towels

TOOLS

Cricut scraper tool or something similar

HOW TO

Spray mat with cleaner.
Let sit for a minute.
Scrape off old paper, glitter, etc.
I used a paper towel to wipe it into the garbage instead of letting all that gunk go down my sink.
Rinse with warm water.
Let air dry.
If it’s no longer tacky, you can tape off the edges and give it a spray with spray glue.

BLOOPERS

This actually went pretty well. I can’t think of any bloopers.

My Favorite Amazon Items

FUN CRAFTING

This is my all-time favorite purchase on Amazon. I love my Cricut Maker!!

Calcium Carbonate is what I use to make chalk paint.

I purchased this HTV for my Cricut. It’s a great starter package! You get all of these different colors for one low price. Instead of buying a whole roll of the same color.

I purchased this exact roller from Amazon. It was definately worth it. It’s great for getting air bubbles out when applying your materials to the Cricut mat. Or, getting air bubles out of transfer paper.

I purchased this transfer tape. It is VERY sticky. I have to stick it to fabric before using it or it is tricky to get off. I haven’t tried any other brand, so I don’t have anything to compare it to. What kind do you use? Do you love it?

Have you heard of this? I bought this off of Amazon. You can Mod Podge a mug and put it in the dishwasher! Have you ever made a gift for someone and then had to tell them they had to handwash it? They probably won’t use the item. This stuff is awesome!

FOR THE HOME

These pillow inserts are great! These are the ones I used for my French Country Drop Cloth Throw Pillow Covers for my living room. I purchased two sets. I would choose these again when purchasing throw pillow inserts.

I love this blender. I bought my first one in 2014. It’s great for smoothies and protein shakes! It can handle ice well!

FLIGHT ATTENDANT FRIENDS

These Clarks Tianna dress shoes in all black leather are the BEST! I can wear them all day long, with no problems.

I LOVE this blender! I keep it in my carry-on. You can go through KCM or TSA with it. I use it on the plane to make my protein shakes with ice. I charge it on my overnights.

If you like to bring boiled eggs in your food bag, these little plastic portable egg holders are perfect! I have been using them in my food bag for awhile now. No more smashed eggs.

I use this lash perm kit. It usually lasts about a month and then you have to do it again. There’s probably enough to do it 4-5 times.

These are the headphones I use while deadheading. They drown out all the noise. Great quality. Works with our IEFB.

I purchased this 10 pack of tray clips. They are perfect for drink service. Holds your drink order paper and clips perfectly to the tray.

A must-have for your makeup. No more digging around looking for something. This stays in my roller bag. I have duplicates of everything at home so that I don’t have to unpack between trips.

Perfect to attach your KCM card to your badge.

I have these luggage tags with my Initial on them on each of my bags. Roller bag, food bag, and carry-on.

I purchase my Emergen-C from Amazon. I like these individual packs. I keep them with all of my vitamins in my food bag.

This little griddle is small enough to put in your food bag. I’ve made cookies, eggs, bacon, and pancakes with it. Perfect for traveling.

This flashlight meets FDA requirements. I keep it in my carry-on.

This Hot Logic Mini was given to me as a gift. I don’t leave home without it. I pack my food for trips and I use this to heat it up in my hotel room on my overnight.
