Make Your Own Baby Yoda Shirt Out of Freezer Paper

Whenever I am shopping, I’ll check the clearance section for some blank tees. This green shirt with glitter has been in my stash for a couple of months now, and I figured I better do something with it before it got too small for Bug.

I came across this super cute Baby Yoda SVG design on Etsy and couldn’t pass it up. It was only $1.99 for the file, and I love supporting my fellow designers.

I thought the design would look great on this green shirt. Especially since it had a sparkly background on the fabric.

Next, I needed to decide if I wanted to use white HTV (Heat Transfer Vinyl) iron-on or if I wanted to use white screen printing ink. But, it so happened that my new Speedball Squeegee showed up in the mail today! Screen printing for the win!

This is the exact Squeegee that I purchased. It’s so much better than trying to use the Pampered Chef tool that I was trying to use, lol.

HOW TO

Step 1

Lay your freezer paper on your mat, shiny side down.

I use this little roller to smooth out any bubbles. I was skeptical about buying it, but I use it often.

Make sure that you use a much larger piece of freezer paper than your actual design. You’ll be pulling the ink across the paper with the squeegee and you don’t want to get any on your t-shirt that isn’t part of the design.

Step 2

Use your Cricut to cut out the design. Use the Freezer Paper setting for the cut.

You could also use scissors to cut out a design that you draw onto the freezer paper. Just remember, shiny side down.

Step 3

You’ll need some transfer tape for this design. I purchased THIS transfer tape from Amazon. It says medium tack. It is very tacky, so I have to lay it on some fuzzy fabric a couple of times before putting it on something like freezer paper, or I’ll never be able to get it back off.

Before I bought this big roll, I was using the clear contact paper from the Dollar Tree. What kind of transfer tape do you use?

Step 4

Prepare your shirt by ironing down the middle and across where the armpits are. This crosshairs design gives you a guide for placing your design.

Step 5

Fold your design in half horizontally and vertically to give you the crosshairs to match up with creases you made on your shirt.

Cover with a Teflon sheet or piece of parchment paper or piece of fabric.

NOTE: I left the transfer tape on my design and ironed for a few seconds before peeling it off.

Peel off the transfer tape, place your Teflon sheet over the freezer paper, and iron.

The heat setting on your iron should be set to your fabric type. I had mine on the cotton setting.

Iron for about 10 seconds. Flip the whole thing over and iron the back of the shirt.

Step 6

Here is what it looks like when it’s ironed on.

Step 7

Notice how big of a piece of freezer paper I used. This way, I can dabble some screen print ink at the top and pull it across the design with my squeegee.

Step 8

The squeegee I used is wide enough to cover the entire image in one pass. That way, there won’t be any drag lines from the edge of the squeegee.

The hard part is waiting for it to dry. I just set it aside and started working on another project.

I let it dry for a few hours. Some suggest to let it dry overnight. But, I was careful and was able to peel the freezer paper off without getting ink anywhere.

I used my weeding tool to get the small pieces up.

Step 9

I let it dry for a few hours. Some suggest to let it dry overnight. But, I was careful and was able to peel the freezer paper off without getting ink anywhere.

Step 10

Once it’s dry, you’ll have to go over it again with the iron to heat seal it. I use a Teflon sheet, but you could also use parchment paper. That’s it! Easy peasy!

I think it turned out cute and Bug loves it!

BLOOPERS

The design I chose had small jagged edges. It would probably cut vinyl a lot easier than it cuts freezer paper. I didn’t have my material settings on freezer paper at first (I had it on wax paper). So, it took a few tries to get it to cut right.

I also used my light-grip mat initially. I switched it up to my heavy-grip mat, and that worked a lot better.

New Cricut Maker and It Can Cut a Freezer Paper Template Easily!​

So, I finally broke down and purchased a new Cricut! Oh. My. Word. Why did I wait so long? What a considerable difference it is! I bought the Cricut Maker from Amazon. I forgot it was coming, so I didn’t have a project prepared when it got here. But, I decided that a freezer paper template would be the first thing I make.

Every time I tried to cut a freezer paper template, the blade would rip it to shreds. Not this time! This baby cuts like B-U-T-T-E-R!

I have been on a pajama bottom kick lately. The other day, I purchased a few flannel fabrics at Joann’s for 50% off and then all the discounts on top of that they offer. This morning, I made these for the Little Hunter and thought I’d make a matching t-shirt to go with them.

The first thing I did was take an up-close picture of this buck on the material. Next, I uploaded it to Inkscape and created an SVG file. I opened that up in the Cricut Design Space™ app that you can download for free.

I will list the steps of how to get the design on your t-shirt, below.

  • Cricut or scissors if you are cutting by hand
  • iron

HOW TO

Place your freezer paper wax (shiny) side down on your mat.

Look at that precision! [TIP] I put my finger in cornstarch and rubbed it over the design to see it better. This is an excellent technique if you are weeding small areas and can’t see the design.

Be sure to remove the actual design. You want to keep the outline to use as a template.

Prepare your shirt by ironing in half vertically and horizontally. You’ll want the horizontal line to be where the armpits are for this design.

You’ll use this as your placement guide so that your design isn’t crooked.

Fold the template in half vertically and horizontally to give you a guide. Place it onto your t-shirt matching the lines, wax (shiny) side down.

Iron the freezer paper to the shirt. Just use the setting of the garment you are ironing. In this case, my iron was set too COTTON.

I added tape around the design because I can get messy with the ink. (Not shown.) Dabble on some white Speedball fabric ink and using your squeegee, pull the ink down the design.

After a couple of hours, I peeled the tape and the freezer paper template off of the design and let it dry a little longer.

Place a Teflon sheet or parchhment paper over the design and heat set with an iron. Again, I have my iron set to COTTON. Move the iron around so that it doesn’t sit still too long.

These are so cute, and he loves them! In his words, they’re “dope.” This fabric is so comfy; the kids have been wearing them for their AM jammies and their PM jammies during their summer break. LOL

I was so excited to try my new Cricut that when it finished cutting the design, I weeded the outline instead of the buck. I was supposed to do it the other way around.

I grabbed my freezer paper and cut it out again, this time being mindful to only remove the part that I want to be painted.

How to use vinyl as a template for DIY Screen Printing.

I tried several times to cut my design out of freezer paper. I even sharpened my cricket blade (see my post about foil). Alas, it didn’t work. So I cut my design out of vinyl. I used my transfer tape and placed the stencil on my shirt. I used the blue painter’s tape, so I didn’t get the ink on the shirt.

For this DIY screen printing, I used a paint stick and dribbled some Speedball Ink onto the tape. I didn’t have a squeegee, so guys, I used the scraper thing from Pampered Chef. LOL, it worked for the most part.
I dragged the paint down the design with that scraper thing. I let it dry overnight with the stencil still on.

The next day I took the stencil off and noticed that it had bled through at the very bottom. Since it was just a pajama shirt, I decided I was going to leave it as is and not mess with it. I placed my Teflon sheet over it and just ironed it for a couple of minutes, making sure that the iron didn’t remain still too long. The iron sets the ink so that you can wash it. I thought it turned out so cute!

HOW TO

1. Cut your design out of vinyl or freezer paper. (If using freezer paper, make sure you iron it on first.) Place on t-shirt.

TIP: Fold your t-shirt in half, horizontally, then iron crease. Fold your t-shirt in half again, vertically, and iron the crease. Fold your design in half and match up the lines on your t-shirt.

2. Tape around the edges of the design to protect the shirt from the ink. I purchased a roll of blue painter’s tape from the dollar tree.

3. Place cardboard inside of the shirt to protect it from any ink that may leak through.

 

4. Dabble some ink onto the top of the design.

5. You’ll need a squeegee to drag the ink down the stencil. I didn’t have one, so I used this Pampered Chef scraper tool. (I don’t recommend it.) You could also use a paintbrush, but the ink will not be smooth.

6. Using your squeegee, drag the paint down the stencil.

 

7. Let the ink dry. If the stencil is small enough to take off while it’s damp, I would remove it then. But, this one was so big, I was afraid of messing up the design while trying to peel this off.

8. Carefully remove the stencil.

9. Cover your design with parchment paper or some sort of protective sheet. I used a teflon sheet. Set your iron to the cotton setting (or whatever material your item is made of).  Iron over the design, being mindful to not leave the iron in one spot for too long.

10. All done! Look how cute! And, she loved it!

BLOOPERS

I wish I had a squeegee. I’m going to have to get one for next time. You could use a stencil brush, but I wanted the ink to be even. The edges of the Pampered Chef scraper thing made a line through the design, so I don’t think I’ll use it again.

This was my first attempt at trying to cut freezer paper using my ancient Cricut Expression. This machine is over 10 years old. I really need to get a new Cricut.

FUN CRAFTING

This is my all-time favorite purchase on Amazon. I love my Cricut Maker!!

Calcium Carbonate is what I use to make chalk paint.

I purchased this HTV for my Cricut. It’s a great starter package! You get all of these different colors for one low price. Instead of buying a whole roll of the same color.

I purchased this exact roller from Amazon. It was definately worth it. It’s great for getting air bubbles out when applying your materials to the Cricut mat. Or, getting air bubles out of transfer paper.

I purchased this transfer tape. It is VERY sticky. I have to stick it to fabric before using it or it is tricky to get off. I haven’t tried any other brand, so I don’t have anything to compare it to. What kind do you use? Do you love it?

Have you heard of this? I bought this off of Amazon. You can Mod Podge a mug and put it in the dishwasher! Have you ever made a gift for someone and then had to tell them they had to handwash it? They probably won’t use the item. This stuff is awesome!

FOR THE HOME

These pillow inserts are great! These are the ones I used for my French Country Drop Cloth Throw Pillow Covers for my living room. I purchased two sets. I would choose these again when purchasing throw pillow inserts.

I love this blender. I bought my first one in 2014. It’s great for smoothies and protein shakes! It can handle ice well!

FLIGHT ATTENDANT FRIENDS

These Clarks Tianna dress shoes in all black leather are the BEST! I can wear them all day long, with no problems.

I LOVE this blender! I keep it in my carry-on. You can go through KCM or TSA with it. I use it on the plane to make my protein shakes with ice. I charge it on my overnights.

If you like to bring boiled eggs in your food bag, these little plastic portable egg holders are perfect! I have been using them in my food bag for awhile now. No more smashed eggs.

I use this lash perm kit. It usually lasts about a month and then you have to do it again. There’s probably enough to do it 4-5 times.

These are the headphones I use while deadheading. They drown out all the noise. Great quality. Works with our IEFB.

I purchased this 10 pack of tray clips. They are perfect for drink service. Holds your drink order paper and clips perfectly to the tray.

A must-have for your makeup. No more digging around looking for something. This stays in my roller bag. I have duplicates of everything at home so that I don’t have to unpack between trips.

Perfect to attach your KCM card to your badge.

I have these luggage tags with my Initial on them on each of my bags. Roller bag, food bag, and carry-on.

I purchase my Emergen-C from Amazon. I like these individual packs. I keep them with all of my vitamins in my food bag.

This little griddle is small enough to put in your food bag. I’ve made cookies, eggs, bacon, and pancakes with it. Perfect for traveling.

This flashlight meets FDA requirements. I keep it in my carry-on. 

This Hot Logic Mini was given to me as a gift. I don’t leave home without it. I pack my food for trips and I use this to heat it up in my hotel room on my overnight.
